ADDENDUM NOTES TO 1910 BUTTE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA ftp://ftp.us-census.org/pub/usgenweb/census/ca/butte/1910/ 1. After the census was completed, there were other numbers & letters added in the last four columns, #s 29, 30, 31 & 32. These were usually in a series of four, and apparently were some kind of tally, but no pattern was readily seen. The folks at USGenWeb did not know their exact purpose and said they should be ignored for this transcription. When it could be ascertained that there were entries in these columns necessary to the census itself, such as “Number of Farm Schedule,” then they were transcribed. 2. Children’s ages were often entered with a whole number plus a fraction, such as 1 7/12. These were transcribed as entered, but the instructions are clear that they should have been counted as of their last birthday. 3. The pages had two number systems: printed Page #s and handwritten Sheet #s. The Page #s appeared alternately: Page #1 on Sheet #1A, no Page # on Sheet #1B, Page #2 on Sheet #2A, no Page # on Sheet #2B, Page #3 on Sheet #3A, . . . etc. The Page numbers run consecutively thru to the end of the county; the Sheet numbers repeat themselves with each new precinct. There is one error in this process: P246A was entered on a “B” page: that is the line #s are from 51 thru 100 rather than 1 thru 50 as they should be. 4. The printed Page #s are at the top of the pages, but most of the tops of the pages were not photocopied. Therefore many of the Page #s had to be deduced by counting from the last page # that was visible. 5. Under Race, the enumerators sometimes entered other designations than are expressed in the instructions. (These instructions may be found at: www.ipums.umn.edu/~pipums/voliii/inst1910.html). One such was Mxd for those of Indian (Hindi). The instructions say these should have been entered as “Ot” and their race written in the left hand margin – which was not done. 6. Because the Indian Population (American Indian) pages have more columns to them (46 rather than 32) they have been entered into their own separate files. These Indian Population pages are not separated in the original census pages, but mixed in with the white population pages. On reel #1 (T624-73) the first four occur after Page 8B. On reel #2 (T624-74) the first occurs after Page 10B. In the separate files, the numbers on these Indian Population pages continue as if they were still in the order as recorded within the main census. 7. For some reason, the Indian Population pages are much darker and harder to view than the others. The tribe entered as Mydoo is properly spelled Midoo. On reel #1 the tribe’s name was originally entered as Concow but in most cases the name Concow was crossed out and Mydoo written above. In some cases the name Concow was crossed out and nothing added, in which case no entry was made in the transcription. This pattern follows for the other tribes as well. 8. The last page -- #334A -- of reel #1 was messed up in reproduction. It appears three times: the first two unreadable, and the last is okay. 9. The original transcription begins in an orderly fashion with regard to Enumeration Districts. Reel #1 begins with Bidwell Township as Enumeration District #1. Chico Township goes to ED #2, then #3. But then the next ED #s are 197, 198, 199, 200, 201, then back to ED 4, then 5 and on thru 13. ================================================================================================================= This Census was transcribed by Neil Teague and is NOT YET proofread for the USGenWeb Census Project http://www.us-census.org/ =================================================================================================================
