Benton, U.S. Senator from Missouri. It was formed on February 18, 1840. The land that would become Benton County was originally part of Jasper County. The lands of present northwest Indiana were explored by French explorer Robert de LaSalle. At that time the area was inhabited by the Miani Confederation of Indians. Through settlement, encroachment, and confrontation, the various Confederation members were forced to cede their claim to the area. By 1832, all land in northwestern Indiana had been ceded to the United States.
