Bollinger, MO 1860 Federal Census TRANSCRIBER's Notes This transcription of the 1860 Bollinger County, Missouri Federal census was taken from a diazo microfilm, National Archives number M653-608. Because Bollinger County was carved from Cape Girardeau, Madison, Stoddard and Wayne Counties in 1851, this is its first Federal census. The census was enumerated by James McLane who does not appear as one of the county's residents. Its earliest recorded date is June 1, 1860 and it was submitted to Justice of the County Court, Eli Richards, on September 5, 1860. The page numbers used are those handwritten in the upper right corner of every other page; these appear to have been written at the time of the filming. However, both the dates on individual pages and the dwelling/family numbers are out of order and do not correspond with each other. Dates are generally sequential, but reflect the pages filmed out of order. Dates and post offices are omitted or nebulous in the last 15 pages. Long stretches of entries for individuals record no state of birth. It appears that in many cases ditto marks were added after the copy was made and in some areas those dittos were not inserted, in which case the last state of birth should be used; most of the time that state is Missouri. And, German, Lawrance and Castor Townships appear in two separate sections each. Researchers looking for people living in the same general area are advised to use the dwelling/family numbers, but a perusal of the entire census of the 7,135 individuals may be necessary to be totally thorough. Mr. McLanes' handwriting is clear and firm and the ink has not faded. Spelling is frequently phonetic, e.g. Illinois : Illinoise, so researchers might be rewarded by using a similar approach. ================================================================================== This Census was transcribed by Dorothy Oberhausen and proofread by Dan Oberhausen for the USGenWeb Census Project, http://www.us-census.org/ ==================================================================================
