Pike, MO 1850 Federal Census TRANSCRIBER's NOTES: It was apparent while transcribing this census that someone had come along after the fact and wrote in birthplaces for those left blank. When the birthplace was unknown and written in the census taker's hand, I entered it in lower case. In incidents where I transcribed UNKNOWN, it was written in the other hand. This information written in the DD&B column would not fit in the REMARKS section, so it is included here: P. 229A, line 8 - This young man is halfable in his limbs & his growth stopped at an early age [This is written at the conclusion of the census, explaining why there were two census takers for the county.] On the 17th of September 1850 it became evident to Mr. Pettibone that he alone could not accomplish the work of his subdivision and at his request I appointed by commission Saml. W. Finley (an efficient & competent man) to assist him in the completion of the work. The riding after Sept 25 was done by said Finley and consequintly his signature appears on the pages from that date. The families enumerated by Mr. Pettibone are 1302 and by Mr. Finley 369 ------- Total 1671 They asked however to have the account all made in the name of Mr. Pettibone, thus it is done. I mention that this work has been delay near 10 days by a mistake of the P. M. in sending it to Jefferson City instead of this place. St. Louis Jan 7, 1851 Jno W. Twichell M. J. Marshal M. Dist. The same has been done in 4 or 5 other districts and this will explain all. J. W. Twichell Marshal
