Tippah County, MS 1840 Federal Census Transcriber's notes: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I purchased my copy of the 1840 census from S-K Publications. I used the stamped page numbers as the Census Transcription Directions advised. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Up to page 210 the handwritten page numbers went smoothly. However, when I got to page 211 I found the page numbering became confusing. There are two page 211's one with a slave count for 30 lines and the other with Heads of Families of 4 families. I found out when I went to the library and looked at the microfilm that the page with the Heads of Families (30 lines) was missing from my copy of the pages. In my transcription I have used the page number 211a for this missing page. On the handwritten page number 211 is 4 heads of family listed but the slave count for these families is actually on page 212. After the 4 Heads of families, page 211 begins the transfer of totals from each page of the census. The page numbers used by the person who added up the numbers were handwritten page numbers from page 1 to 39. Line 32, page 211 contains the total of the prior census pages plus the total for the 4 heads of families also listed on that page. Line 32 is carried over to Line 14, page 212. Then on line 34 is the total for all pages. This is probably not too important except for the 30 heads of families and the four heads of families on the mixed up pages. The rest of pages 212 are the recapitulation of Tippah County. I found errors in addition on some of the individual census pages therefore my totals don't match theirs. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This Census was transcribed by Lenore Lowry Gifford and proofread by Jennifer Powers for the USGenWeb Census Project http://www.us-census.org/ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
