ENUMERATOR'S REMARKS for the above page: It was never ascertained whether the drowning of McNally (12) was intentional or accidental but most likely the latter. This borough is the immediate locality of the Cambria Iron Works. Its largest and most productive rail manufacturing establishment in the United States and property here as principally owned by the Company. The houses are chiefly wooden structures and are built in blocks to accommodate a number of families under one roof. ========================================================================================================================================================================================================================= CENSUS YEAR: 1860 STATE: PA COUNTY: Cambria DISTRICT: Richland Township ENUMERATOR: H. Some of its inhabitants can be scarcely said to have any neighbors so far removed as they from other human habitations. Jackson is more open, but there is yet room for improvement. Here has been discovered within a few years, has been discovered a rich vein of Cannel coal on the farm of Mr. Joseph Burkhart and hence the high figure at which his land is sold. The bottom probably being the reason why the vein has not yet been worked. ========================================================================================================================================================================================================================= CENSUS YEAR: 1860 STATE: PA COUNTY: Cambria DISTRICT: Taylor Township ENUMERATOR: H. Much of the place is located on the side of a hill and is difficult of access. It contains not a few good farms but its principal wealth consists in its Iron Ore and Bituminous Coal deposits. The portion adjoining Millville and known as Cambria City contains two–thirds of the population of the township. ========================================================================================================================================================================================================================== CENSUS YEAR: 1860 STATE: PA COUNTY: Cambria DISTRICT: Allegheny Township ENUMERATOR: James Murray -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FILE PAGE PAGE LINE LAST-NAME FIRST-NAME AGE SEX COLOR F/S M/W BIRTH-PLACE MONTH OCCUPATION CAUSE-OF-DEATH #DAYS-ILL TOWNSHIP/DIV TRANSCRIBER'S REMARKS ========================================================================================================================================================================================================================== 9 3 1 Bradley John 1 M . . . We have some lime stone but it lays very deep. In Susquehanna, Clearfield, and White Townships, Pine is the prevailing timber. The balance of my sub-dividion is timbered with Beach, Sugar, Oak, Chesnut, Poplar, Cherry, and Spruce or Hemlock. The soil is composed of sand, clay and gravel. The Gravel is our best wheat land. ========================================================================================================================================================================================================================== CENSUS YEAR: 1860 STATE: PA COUNTY: Cambria DISTRICT: Chest Township ENUMERATOR: James Murray -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FILE PAGE PAGE LINE LAST-NAME FIRST-NAME AGE SEX COLOR F/S M/W BIRTH-PLACE MONTH OCCUPATION CAUSE-OF-DEATH #DAYS-ILL TOWNSHIP/DIV TRANSCRIBER'S REMARKS ========================================================================================================================================================================================================================== 11 4 1 Westrick Andrew 49 M . .
