Somerset, PA 1800 Federal Census Notes on the transcriptions for Elklick, Milford, and Stonycreek Townships: "ss" is my typing of what I am reading as the colonial double letter (which looks like modern-day fs). "ff" is my typing of a far less decipherable pair of letters (usually affecting certain names beginning with K--) This could be as easily pf or pl in reality. I chose to not type in the nonwhite columns except for the households where such people were present (you will notice that there are none in "Stonycreek"). In the actual census, zeroes exist where there is no entry for nonwhites. I retained the one-word spellings of townships in the census. The 1800 census for Elklick, Milford, and Stonycreek Townships does not have line totals for any family. It does have the census taker's addition of the totals he got for each township (total, so many heads of household, under-10 males, etc.). However, the template had no obvious place to put these, so they are not included in this transmission. The template also had no addition function to ease checking of totals. I believe that I have matched the census-taker's totals for Elk Lick and Milford. Despite rechecking input back to the census at the Archives, there are slight differences (1 or 2) in some of the columns for Stony Creek. Perhaps the census taker is in error, not me, but if someone else with access to the census could proof this it would be greatly appreciated. Victoria A.
