Somerset, PA 1850 Federal Census TRANSCRIBER'S NOTES - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - GENERAL COMMENTS: The enumerator consistently, throughout this enumeration, entered numbers in Column 10 (marriage column), Column 11 (attending school), and Column 12 (persons who can not read or write). I showed this in my transcription by marking the applicable column then in the remarks entered the column number-the number entered by the enumerator. For example, in remarks Col. 10-1, Col. 12-2 would mean the number 1 was entered in Column 10 and the number 2 was entered in Column 12. The enumerator used ditto marks although there were empty lines between the written occupation and the ditto marks. I showed this in my transcription by stating in the remarks "Ditto marks used for occupation. Last listed occ.-_______." Last listed occ. refers to the last written occupation. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Addison Township 1850 Text notes: The enumerator consistently, throughout this enumeration, entered numbers in Column 10 (marriage collumn), Column 11 (attending school), and Column 12 (persons who can not read or write). The last name appears to be Lechler but the way the enumerator duplicates it on each line it could be taken differently. Such as the "L" could be "S", the "c" as an "e", and the "h" as a "k". With this in mind, the surname could be taken for at least 12 or more spelling variations. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Greenville Township 1850 Transcriber's Notes Lines with ditto marks as stated above are listed as follows: Page 301a - line 37. Line 33 - listed as Labourer. Page 296b-line 15-column 1 & 2 - Looks as if the enumerator overwrote the # 9 with the # 10. Written above the write over is the # 10. Page 296b-line 26-column 1 & 2 - Looks as if the enumerator overwrote the # 10 with the # 9. Page 297b-lines 20 to 31 - the enumerator spells the last name as Yutzey on some of the lines and then Yutsey on the other lines. I showed this in my transcription by marking the applicable column then in the remarks entered the column number-the number entered by the enumerator. The enumerator used the date of Sept. 30th on pages 250a - 252b. On page 249b the date used was Oct. 30th. All dates from the first page of this township ( Page 228a) were in sequence until page 250a. It is very hard to distinguish between enumerator's 4 and 6. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Quemahoning Township 1850 Transcriber's Notes: Enumerator's fancy writing makes this census difficult to read. It is very hard to distinguish between his "S" and "L". - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Somerset Borough 1850 Transcriber's notes: Enumerator's fancy writing makes this census difficult to read. It is very hard to distinguish between his "S" and "L". It is also hard to distinguish between his "J" and "I". When using smaller case letters, the enumerator's "u" and "n" plus "i" and "e" are hard to make out. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Southampton Township 1850 Transcriber's Notes: Lines with ditto marks as stated above in the general comments are listed as follows: Page 204a - line 25. Page 269b - lines 33 to 37 - the enumerator appears to have the name Bowser but then some of the lines you can not tell if he changed Bowser to Bowen or Bower or whether he got sloppy in his handwriting for these lines. Page 274a - Name could possibly be Glodfelty, Glodfelly, or Gladfelly. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ========================================================================== This Census was transcribed and proofread by a team of volunteers for the USGenWeb Census Project, http://www.us-census.org/ ==========================================================================
