Somerset, PA 1880 U. S. Federal Census TRANSCRIBER'S NOTES: - - - - - - - - - - - Berlin Borough - - - - - - - - - - - Proofreader's Notes: The quality of the census is poor and very difficult to read. Illegible items are indicated by an asterisk ( * ). Empty fields are indicated by a dot ( . ). - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Middlecreek Township - - - - - - - - - - - Throughout the transcription the enumerator entered a mark for the read and/or write columns then crossed it off. Where this occurs I transcribed it as **X The enumerator spelled heese Cassel differently everytime he wrote it. On page 366A, Lines 37 to 42 the majority of the columns between Occupation and Birthplace are illegible because of tape markings. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Quemahoming Township - - - - - - - - - - - The enumerator's handwriting is difficult to read, many times his "o" & "a"; "n" & "u" are hard to tell apart and this compounds it by being inconsistant with his letter making. The majority of the pages at the top have several names listed. These names are illegible to poor; however, enough of the writing shows in making me think these names were a part of the mortality used for the Mortality census. The enumerator or someone at later time put check marks and lines in Column 14 for tallying. I did not record these. It is hard to tell if the enumerator is writing the surname Hamer, Homer or Horner throughout this this township. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Somerset Township - - - - - - - - - - - The persons on sheets numbered 21,22, and 23 of #483A , 483B, and 484A are listed as residing in the Somerset County Poorhouse (or Alms House.) Poorhouse, (or Alms House). At the top of page 483A, the enumerator wrote a memo, however only the following words are readable,"…other persons who reside in the establish…" There is an asterisk ("*") next to the following entries: #9, #10, #18, #34, and #43. A line has been drawn through the entire entry. Words appear to have been written in the margin next to these entries, but they are illegible. On sheet 483B, there is an asterisk "*" next to the following entries: #11, #22, #28, #33, and #40. A line is drawn through the entire entry. However, in the margin, the enumerator has written near the above numbers a word that looks like Sched or Scheel. On sheet 484A, the enumerator makes two entries, then writes: I certify that I have this day completed the enumeration of the district assigned me and that the returns are duty and truthfully made in accordance with law and my oath of office.
