It existed from 1822 to 1825. The site is now underwater. (2) A fur trade post also called French Post (1833) and John La Barge's Post (1840-1851). It existed from 1831 to 1851. It was a log house that was not palisaded. It burned and was rebuilt, and later burned again. Located on the west bank of the Missouri River about 10 miles upriver from Chamberlain, about 300 yards south of Fort Lookout (4). (3) A fur trade post, located east of Fort Hale. It is belived to have existed from 1833 to 1843. The site is now underwater. Some archaeologists believe this post may be at the same site as Fort Lookout (1). (4) An Army post, located on the west bank of the Missouri River about 10 miles above Chamberlain, about 300 yards north of the site of Fort Lookout (2). It existed from 1856 to 1857. After it was dismantled, salvageable materials were sent downriver to Fort Randall. The site may have been later used as a campsite by Capt. Whitney's troops during the 1863 Sioux Uprising Campaign. Some birth places were reported as Hudson Bay Territory. This was actually Rupert's Land, which was a territory in British North America, consisting of the Hudson Bay drainage basin, which was nominally owned by the Hudson's Bay Company from 1670 to 1870. Areas belonging to Rupert's Land were mostly in present-day Canada and included the whole of Manitoba, most of Saskatchewan, southern Alberta, southern Nunavut, and northern parts of Ontario and Quebec. It also included present-day United States territory, including parts of the states of Minnesota and North Dakota and very small parts of Montana and South Dakota. ========================================================================================================================================== CENSUS YEAR: 1860 STATE: Dakota Territory DISTRICT: Fort Lookout MICROFILM #: M653-94 ENUMERATOR: Oscar W.
