Then, I went to my local library and looked at the census on microfilm and then I wondered how S-K Publications made such a good copy. Because there was no preprinted form for the 1820 Overton County census, the recorded information apparently was written on plain paper. Thus, the information tends to travel up and down on each line and each page has a different number of names on it. The beginning page has 41 names and the last page has 28 names. The pages in between have a various amount of names on each page. The amount of names in between varies from 47 to 59. The larger the amount of names on one page the smaller the writing. I used the S-K Publications as the main source for the transcription. In troubled areas of the census, I referred to a transcription made by a group of Indiana school teachers in the 1980's. Sometimes, it helped and sometimes it didn't. Since, the top and bottoms of the S-K copy was some times torn or too dark to read, I gained a few names by making copies of the microfilm at the library of the very bottoms and tops of some of the pages. I used a magnifying glass that belonged to my maternal grandfather. The names of the Indiana teachers are: Davis, Moulton, and Mullins. I enjoyed the work and put a great effort in the work. The original census taker used many spelling forms that could represent his inability to spell correctly. Here is a list of some of the names; the first form is from the census and the second the list: Right - Wright, Oens - Owens, Rion - Ryon, Goar - Gore, Renolds - Reynolds, Raburn - Rayburn, Briant - Bryant. There were many more but this is just an example. Any researcher who intends to follow his family to the 1830 Overton County census should be aware that Fentress County, Tennessee, was formed in 1823 from parts of Overton, Morgan and White Counties.
