Rappahannock County, VA 1850 Federal Census ftp://ftp.us-census.org/pub/usgenweb/census/va/rappahannock/1850/ ===================== TRANSCRIBER'S NOTES: ===================== 1. At the top of the first page of the census is written: Re-Examined by J.J. Gozdon, June 11, 1852. 2. The Census Taker had very good handwriting. Once I got used to his style of writing, the names were easy to determine. 3. When the Census Taker did not use any ditto marks in the Place of Birth column, I left the Place of Birth blank. 4. The Census Taker wrote his capital "S" two different ways. His capital "I" and "J" were similar. I tried to differentiate between the two, especially when the letter was an initial. 5. At times, the ink was very light. I used my best judgment to determine what the letter was. 6. At the bottom of the census pages were added the total of Males, Females, and Colored (Col.) for that page. Sometimes the bottom of the census page was not captured in the image that I was viewing and parts or all of the numbers are missing. 7. Page 101a - Written in the first column from line number 8 to 20 was "Boarding School". 8. Page 108b - Written in the first column from line number 30 to 38 was "Tavern". 9. Page 121b - Written in the first column from line number 13 to 25 was "Boarding House". 10. Page 131b - The last Dwelling and Family numbers on the page were 658/658. When a Family was carried over to the next page, the Census Taker did not write the Dwelling and Family numbers again until the next Family was added. When he started numbering on page 132a the numbers started at 660/660. 11. Page 133a - Written in the first column from line number 17 to 34 was "Boarding House". 12. Page 137b - Written in the first column from line number 31 to 42 was "Boarding House". 13. Page 142b - There was an error in numbering. The Dwelling Numbers and Family Numbers went from 803/803 on page 142a to 704/704 on page 142b. At Line 19 of page 142b the numbers changed to 807/807. 15. Page 143b - From line 22 to the bottom of the page, there was a change in handwriting. It looks like someone else wrote in the information. 15. Page 145b - From line 1 to line 22 is written "County Poor House". In the last column on line 23 was written the number 18, which I believe is a count of the number of Paupers in the Poor House. 16. The following was written on Page 155b: "I do hereby certify that the foregoing enumeration of the Free Inhabitants of the County of Rappahannock State of Virginia was made according to my oath and instructions to the best of my knowledge and belief. Given under my hand this 27th day of January 1851. George W. McQueen Asst. Marshal" "The above certificate was Subscribed and Sworn to before me a Justice of the peace in said county of Rappahannock & state of Virginia. This 31st day of January 1851. W.W. Drutherage J.P." ========================================================================== This Census was transcribed by Nancy Knizer and proofread by Beth Knizer for the USGenWeb Census Project, http://www.us-census.org/ ==========================================================================
